Abstract: The main failure mechanism of field emitter arrays （FEAs） is Vacuum Arc（VA）. This paper summarized phenomena of VA, then suggested a thermal-electric model to describe VA damage. This model specifies the amount of material, energy, power and time involved in VA and the energy sources leading to VA. According to this model, some measures are proposed to minimize the initiating and damage of VA.
