Abstract: Fundamental concept,classification and development for intelligent materials and structures were reviewed.Four kinds of materials which are the research hotspots recently were described including piezoelectric ceramics and polymers,sophisticated optical fiber,shape memory alloys,electrorheological fluids and magn etorheological fluids.The industr ial and military applications of intelligent materials and structur es were discussed as well.
