3O
12 (BGO) is a cubic crystal with transmission range extending from 0.3 to 6
μm. It promises to be a material for optical application without natural birefringence and optical activity. Experimental results of acousto-optic modulator (AOM) based on BGO crystal are presented:central frequency-of the device is 80 MHz with 12 MHz bandwidth, greater than 43% of the incident light beam (633nm) can be deflected for a standing wave device with 1W driving power, it means that the diffraction efficiency of zero-order light beam is about 57%. Besides AO effect, BGO also shows other optoelectronic properties, including electro-optic (EO), magneto-optic (MO), photorefraction (PR) and lasing. The possibilities for developing novel compound effects devices such as AOQ/Laser, AOML/Laser etc. based on above optoelectronic properties of BGO crystal are discussed.
